Grind Out All Rotted Metal to Bare Steel
Mount a 60-grit flap disc on your angle grinder and grind away all bubbling paint, rust flakes, and thin swiss-cheesed metal around the hole. Continue grinding 1 to 2 inches beyond visible rust until you expose clean, shiny bare metal with zero black pitting. Use tin snips or a rotary tool to cut away paper-thin edges that flex under light finger pressure.
