How to Change a Bicycle Inner Tube

Remove the Wheel from the Bike Frame
If working on the rear wheel, shift the chain onto the smallest cog first. Release the rim brake quick-release lever or caliper cable if equipped with rim brakes. Open the axle quick-release lever (or loosen axle nuts with a 15mm wrench) and lift the wheel clear of the frame dropouts.

Dismount One Bead of the Tire
Depress the valve core to let all remaining air out, and unthread the valve retaining ring if present. Squeeze the tire sidewalls toward the rim center to break the bead seal. Insert the scoop of one plastic tire lever under the tire bead, hook its handle onto a spoke, then insert a second lever 3 inches away and slide it clockwise around the rim to pop the entire bead off.

Remove Old Tube and Inspect Tire Casing
Pull the old tube out from between the tire and rim, lifting the valve stem straight out of the rim hole last. Carefully sweep the inside of the tire casing using a clean rag, checking for thorns, glass shards, or wire fragments poking through. Inspect the outer tread visually and pick out any embedded debris with fingernails or tweezers.

Partially Inflate and Insert the New Tube
Pump 1 to 2 strokes of air into the new tube until it holds a round, circular shape without stretching. Push the valve stem straight through the rim valve hole so it points directly toward the hub. Tuck the rounded tube fully inside the tire cavity all the way around the wheel, making sure there are no twists or folds.

Reseat the Tire Bead onto the Rim
Starting directly opposite the valve stem, use the palms and thumbs of both hands to push and roll the loose tire bead back over the rim edge. Work both hands simultaneously toward the valve stem, keeping the bead in the rim's center drop channel. For the final tight section at the valve, push the valve stem inward slightly into the tire so the tube isn't caught under the bead, then roll the final section over the rim lip using heel-of-palm pressure.

Inflate to Pressure and Reinstall Wheel
Inflate the tire to 15-20 PSI, then inspect both sides of the wheel 360 degrees to verify the bead line is evenly seated above the rim and no tube is bulging out. Pump to the manufacturer's recommended PSI printed on the tire sidewall. Reinstall the wheel into the frame dropouts, tighten the quick-release skewer firmly (or torque axle nuts), and reclose the brake quick-release mechanism.
