📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Locate and Mark the Puncture
Spray soapy water over the entire tire tread while rolling or inspecting the surface. Look for active bubbling caused by escaping air, or visually identify embedded nails or screws. Circle the exact puncture site with chalk so you do not lose it when the object is removed.
- • A clear cluster of expanding soap bubbles or an embedded fastener circled with chalk on the tread face.
- • Failing to mark the spot before pulling the nail, causing you to lose the hole immediately.
Extract the Foreign Object
Grip the exposed head of the nail or screw firmly with pliers. Pull or unscrew the object out along the same angle it entered to avoid enlarging the channel. Keep the reamer tool within arm's reach for immediate insertion.
- • The nail or screw is completely removed and sitting away from the tire, with an audible hiss of escaping air.
- • Snapping the head off a rusted screw by jerking sideways instead of pulling straight out.
Ream and Clean the Puncture Channel
Coat the tip of the T-handle spiral reamer with rubber cement. Push the reamer straight into the puncture hole using firm, twisting pressure, then move it in and out 3 to 5 times. This cleans dirt out of the wound and roughens the steel belts for better adhesion.
- • Reamer is inserted fully past the tire tread and slides smoothly with friction after multiple plunges.
- • Reaming at a completely different angle than the original puncture path, creating a false secondary channel.
Load the Insertion Needle
Peel one sticky rubber plug strip from the backing card. Thread the strip halfway through the eyelet of the insertion needle so equal lengths hang on both sides. Apply a generous coating of rubber cement over the entire threaded strip.
- • The rubber plug is centered evenly in the needle eyelet forming a tight 'V' shape coated in wet cement.
- • Threading the plug off-center, leaving one side too short to bridge the inner tire liner.
Insert the Plug and Release the Needle
Pull the reamer out and immediately push the loaded needle tool straight into the puncture hole. Push until about 2/3 of the plug is inside the tire, leaving roughly 1/2 to 3/4 inch of loops protruding. Without twisting, pull the T-handle straight back with a rapid, firm jerk to release the plug from the slotted needle.
- • Two plug ends protrude approximately 1/2 inch from the tread surface while the needle comes out clean and empty.
- • Twisting the needle handle while pulling out, which cuts the plug inside the tire and ruins the seal.
Trim Excess Plug and Verify Pressure
Use a utility knife or razor blade to slice the protruding plug ends nearly flush with the tread blocks (leave about 1/16 inch). Connect the air inflator, pump the tire to the vehicle manufacturer specification found on the door jamb sticker, and spray soapy water over the plug to confirm zero bubbling.
- • Plug ends are trimmed level with the tread surface and soapy water applied over the repair shows zero active bubbles.
