How to Install an Off-Road Snorkel
Mount an off-road intake snorkel to your 4x4 fender, cut clearance holes in sheet metal, and seal the ducting watertight to the factory airbox.

📋 Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Apply Masking Tape and Align Template
Cover the entire upper fender area generously with blue painter's tape to protect the clearcoat from tool scratches. Align the paper cutout template flush with the fender seam, door gap, and A-pillar contour according to the kit's datum marks. Secure the template with tape so it cannot shift.
- • Fender is fully covered in blue tape with the paper template smoothed flat and taped tight against body seams.
- • Aligning the template to the fender flare instead of the actual body seam, offsetting all drill marks.
Mark and Center Punch All Holes
Use a fine-tip marker to fill in every bolt hole circle and the large main intake opening on the template. Remove the paper template, keeping the tape on the fender. Press a spring-loaded center punch directly into the center of every marked hole to create a crisp mechanical divot.
- • Sharp ink marks and deep punch dimples are visible in the center of every mounting location on the taped fender.
- • Skipping the center punch, causing drill bits to wander and scratch the paint.
Drill Mounting Holes and Cut Main Intake Opening
Drill small 1/8-inch pilot holes through all punched points. Enlarge the mounting stud holes using a step bit to the specified diameter. Cut the large intake hole using the correct size bi-metal hole saw at low speed with steady, firm pressure.
- • A large circular port and clean smaller mounting holes cut cleanly through the fender skin.
- • Running the hole saw at max RPM, which overheats the teeth and warps the thin fender panel.
Deburr and Treat Raw Metal Edges
Remove the painter's tape and clean all loose metal shavings off the fender. Run a half-round metal file along both the inner and outer cut edges until completely smooth to the touch. Brush anti-rust primer or color-matched touch-up paint over all exposed bare metal edges and allow to dry.
- • Smooth, snag-free hole perimeters completely coated in a solid layer of wet or tacky primer paint.
- • Leaving bare steel unpainted, leading to bubbling rust under the snorkel base within months.
Install A-Pillar Bracket and Snorkel Body
Thread the mounting studs into the brass inserts on the back of the snorkel body. Position the A-pillar upper bracket, drill the pillar mounting holes, install the supplied rivets or screws, and secure the bracket. Pass the snorkel studs through the fender holes and loosely thread locknuts and washers from behind the fender.
- • Snorkel body sits flush against the fender profile with all studs inserted through the panel and nuts started.
- • Torquing down the fender studs before the A-pillar bracket is aligned, causing stress cracks in the plastic.
Connect, Seal, and Secure Intake Ducting
Connect the snorkel's internal duct adapter to the factory airbox inlet tube. Apply a generous continuous bead of RTV silicone around every mating joint and slip the flexible duct over the flanges. Tighten stainless steel hose clamps until snug and torque down all fender mounting nuts securely.
- • Hose clamps tightened over fully seated ducting with visible silicone squeeze-out around all joint perimeters.
- • Failing to seal the factory airbox drain holes or seams, compromising the water-tight integrity of the system.
Install Air Ram Head and Reassemble Fender Liner
Slide the ram air head intake scoop over the top snorkel tube facing forward (or backward for heavy snow/dust conditions). Tighten the black band clamp firmly with a flathead screwdriver or socket. Reinstall the plastic inner fender liner, clips, and wheels.
- • Ram air head is locked level and upright at the top of the snorkel; inner fender liner is clipped securely in place.
- • Overtightening the band clamp and cracking the intake collar of the ram head.
