How to Install a Battery Kill Switch

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Disconnect the Negative Battery Terminal
Loosen the nut on the negative (-) battery terminal clamp using a wrench. Lift the clamp off the battery post and tuck it completely away from the battery to prevent accidental contact while working.

- โข Cable clamp is tucked safely to the side or wrapped in a shop towel.
- โข Leaving the negative cable resting closely against the battery terminal where it can spring back and touch.
Mount the Kill Switch Bracket
Select a clean, sturdy location on the firewall, inner fender, or battery tray that is easy to reach but clear of moving engine parts. Mark the mounting holes with a marker, drill the pilot holes, and bolt the switch securely in place using locking hardware.

- โข Clear clearance exists around switch terminals to prevent contact with surrounding metal panels.

Cut and Strip the Ground Cables
Route your heavy-gauge cable from the battery negative post to the switch, and from the switch to the chassis ground point. Cut the cables to length with slight slack, then strip roughly 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch of insulation off each end using a wire stripper or utility knife.
- โข Cables lay naturally along the engine bay route without tight bends or tension.
- โข Stripped ends reveal clean, untorn copper strands matching the depth of the copper lug barrel.
- โข Cutting cables too short, causing tension on the switch terminals.
- โข Nicking or severing individual copper strands while stripping the heavy insulation.
Crimp Lugs and Apply Heat Shrink
Slide a section of adhesive heat shrink onto the cable, insert the bare copper strands fully into the copper lug, and crimp down firmly until completely solid. Slide the heat shrink over the lug collar and cable jacket, then apply heat evenly until adhesive oozes slightly from the edges.
- โข Lug barrel has a deep mechanical crimp indentation and does not move when pulled hard.
- โข Heat shrink is fully contoured around the lug collar and cable with visible glue sealing the rim.
- โข Forgetting to slide the heat shrink tubing onto the wire before crimping the lug.
- โข Under-crimping, leaving the wire loose inside the lug.
Connect Cables to Switch and Battery Ground
Attach one heavy cable from the battery negative post to one switch stud, and attach the second cable from the remaining switch stud to the engine block or bare chassis ground. Secure all nuts over spring lock washers and tighten with a wrench until snug.

- โข Cables are secured with zip ties away from moving fans, pulleys, and exhaust components.
- โข Stacking multiple washers between the lug and the switch terminal face, which creates electrical resistance.

Reconnect Negative Terminal and Test Operation
Reattach the main negative clamp to the battery post and tighten it down. Turn the kill switch to the 'OFF' position and verify vehicle cabin lights remain off, then switch to 'ON' and check for normal dash power and successful engine start.

- โข Vehicle electrical accessories turn off instantly when the switch is set to 'OFF' and activate when turned to 'ON'.
