๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Socket set with 8mm, 10mm, and 13mm sockets
- โ Ratchet wrench with extension bar
- โ Battery terminal and post wire brush
- โ Safety glasses
- โ Nitrile or mechanic work gloves
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ New replacement vehicle battery (correct group size)
- โ Anti-corrosion terminal washers
- โ Dielectric grease or battery terminal protectant spray
- โ Baking soda and water solution
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Always disconnect the negative (black/minus) terminal first and reconnect it last to prevent electrical short-circuits and sparks.
- โข Ensure the vehicle ignition is completely off and keys are outside the vehicle before touching battery connections.
- โข Wear safety glasses to protect eyes from potential sulfuric acid corrosion residue.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Prepare Vehicle and Safety Gear
Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Remove the key fob from the cabin to prevent accidental electronic module wakeups. Put on safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves before opening the hood.
- โข Hood securely propped open with vehicle ignition verified off
- โข Technician wearing eye protection and gloves standing over battery compartment
- โข Leaving ignition in accessory mode
- โข Leaving keys inside vehicle where automatic door locks might trigger
Disconnect the Negative Terminal
Locate the negative terminal, marked with a minus sign (-) and usually covered by a black cap or black wire. Loosen the terminal clamp nut using the appropriate socket wrench. Twist and pull the clamp upward off the post, then tuck it securely away from any metal surfaces.
- โข Negative terminal clamp fully detached from battery post
- โข Negative cable pushed aside with clear air gap between post and clamp
- โข Disconnecting the positive terminal first, risking a tool shorting against the vehicle frame
- โข Prying aggressively on the clamp and cracking the battery casing
Disconnect the Positive Terminal
Flip back the red plastic cover over the positive terminal marked with a plus sign (+). Loosen the clamp nut with your socket wrench. Gently wiggle and lift the clamp off the post, moving it aside so it does not touch metal components.
- โข Both positive and negative cables completely free of battery posts
- โข Battery top clear of all attached wiring
- โข Over-loosening and completely removing the clamp bolt and nut until it drops into the engine bay
Remove Hold-Down Bracket and Old Battery
Use your socket wrench and extension bar to loosen and remove the hold-down bracket securing the battery to its tray. Set the bracket and bolts aside in a safe dish. Grip the battery carrying strap or hold the lower casing firmly with both hands, lifting straight up out of the engine bay.
- โข Hold-down crossbar or base clamp removed
- โข Empty battery tray visible in engine compartment
- โข Lifting with your back instead of legs
- โข Tilting an old flooded lead-acid battery sideways, causing acid leakage
Clean Tray and Drop In New Battery
Clean dirt or white corrosion from the tray and terminal clamps using a wire brush. Lower the new battery into the tray, ensuring the positive and negative posts align with the vehicle's corresponding cable reach. Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten until the battery cannot shift.
- โข New battery sitting flush in tray with terminals oriented matching original layout
- โข Hold-down bracket firmly secured with zero wobble when pushed by hand
- โข Installing the battery backwards with reversed polarity
- โข Over-tightening the hold-down bracket and warping or cracking the plastic case
Connect Positive Cable Then Negative Cable
Remove plastic protective caps from the new posts. Place anti-corrosion felt washers on the posts, then push the positive (+) clamp fully down onto the positive post and tighten its nut until snug. Finally, install the negative (-) clamp onto the negative post and tighten securely.
- โข Positive clamp seated at base of post and fully tightened first
- โข Negative clamp seated second and tightened
- โข Protective red plastic boot flipped down over positive terminal
- โข Connecting negative clamp before positive clamp
- โข Leaving clamp sitting high on the tapered post instead of seated down at the base
Apply Protectant and Verify Operation
Coat both metal terminal clamps with battery terminal protectant spray or dielectric grease to seal out air and moisture. Start the vehicle engine to ensure clean cranking and verify that no battery warning light remains lit on the instrument cluster.
- โข Thin layer of colored protective spray or grease covering terminal connections
- โข Engine running smoothly with no dashboard battery warning light
- โข Spraying protectant on posts BEFORE attaching clamps, which insulates electrical contact

Don’t have everything?
- No Battery terminal and post wire brush? Medium-grit sandpaper or a stiff nylon brush with baking soda paste
- No Battery terminal protectant spray? A thin coating of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) applied over the tightened clamps
