Clean Lens and Mask Surrounding Body Panels
Thoroughly spray the headlight with soapy water and wipe away all road grime and grit with a clean microfiber towel. Open the hood to access the top clips, then apply 2-3 layers of automotive masking tape flush against the headlight housing across the bumper, hood, and fender seams. Ensure no painted sheet metal is exposed within 2 inches of the plastic lens boundary.
- • Headlight surface is completely free of loose dirt and grease.
- • A 2-inch barrier of multi-layered blue or green tape wraps tightly around every edge of the headlight housing.
- • Applying only a single layer of tape that easily shreds during sanding.
- • Failing to clean road grime before sanding, grinding road dirt directly into the plastic.
Wet-Sand Heavy Yellow Oxidation with 1000-Grit
Generously spray both the 1000-grit sandpaper and the headlight lens with soapy lubricant. Wrap the sandpaper around a flexible foam pad and sand horizontally using moderate, even pressure. Sand across the entire lens until all yellow oxidation sloughs off into a milky white slurry, keeping the surface continuously soaked.

- • Lens dries to a completely flat, uniform frosted appearance with zero glossy yellow patches remaining.

Refine Sanding Scratches with 2000 and 3000-Grit
Wipe away the 1000-grit slurry and re-saturate the lens with soapy water. Sand vertically across the entire surface with 2000-grit sandpaper until all horizontal 1000-grit lines vanish, then switch to 3000-grit using light cross-hatch strokes with ample lubrication. The lens should transition from an opaque milky frost to a semi-translucent, satin sheen.

Apply 3-4 pea-sized drops of heavy-cut compound onto a microfiber or firm foam buffing pad mounted to a polisher or drill. Spread the compound across the lens at low speed, then increase to medium speed (approx. 2500–3500 OPM or moderate drill speed), moving in overlapping passes with light-to-moderate downward force. Buff until the haze clears completely and the lens achieves optical transparency, then buff clean with a dry microfiber.

Spray a microfiber towel with 70% isopropyl alcohol and thoroughly wipe down the polished lens to strip all polishing oils, leaving a completely bare surface. Apply an even layer of UV-resistant clear coat sealant or specialized ceramic headlight coating using a lint-free applicator in smooth, overlapping horizontal strokes from top to bottom. Allow the coating to cure undisturbed per the manufacturer's recommended cure time before touching or exposing to moisture.
- • Lens surface shows a glass-like, high-gloss wet reflection without streaks, bubbles, or dry spots.
- • Masking tape is cleanly pulled away leaving crisp, sharp borders.
- • Skipping UV protection, which causes restored headlights to re-yellow within 2-3 months.
