📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Elevate Rear Wheel and Position Overspray Shield
Mount the motorcycle securely on a rear paddock stand or center stand so the rear wheel spins freely. Ensure the transmission is in neutral and the engine is off. Slide a piece of cardboard behind the lower chain run between the chain and the rear wheel/tire.
- • Rear tire is off the ground and rotates smoothly by hand in neutral.
- • Cardboard completely shields the rear rim, tire sidewall, and brake disc from behind the chain.
- • Leaving the bike in gear so the wheel cannot be rotated by hand.
- • Omitting the cardboard shield, allowing aerosol chemicals to mist onto the rear tire and brake.
Apply Chain Cleaner to All Link Surfaces
Spray O-ring safe chain cleaner generously across the top, sides, and bottom of the lower chain run. Rotate the rear wheel backward by hand to cycle through the entire length of the chain until fully wetted. Let the solvent penetrate the caked-on road grime for 1 to 2 minutes.
- • Entire chain has a wet, dripping sheen with dark dissolved grease pooling on cardboard.
- • All outer plates and inner rollers are coated with cleaner.
- • Using harsh automotive brake cleaner or gasoline which degrades internal rubber O-rings/X-rings.
- • Rotating the wheel forward toward the sprocket pinch point instead of backward.
Scrub Chain Plates and Rollers
Clamp the three-sided grunge brush over the chain links on the lower run. Hold the brush firmly with one hand while using your other hand to manually rotate the rear wheel. Work around the entire chain loop twice until compacted road grit and waxy build-up are fully agitated.
- • Hardened grime is broken into a dark liquid slurry across the brush bristles.
- • Metallic sheen of side plates begins showing through the loosened grime.
- • Using a brass or wire brush that scores the metal and rips the delicate rubber seals.
- • Scrubbing only the side plates while neglecting the center rollers.
Wipe Chain Dry with Shop Rags
Wrap a clean lint-free shop rag around the bottom run of the chain. Grasp the rag loosely with one hand and turn the rear wheel backward with the other, stripping away the loosened slurry. Repeat with fresh sections of the rag until the chain is completely dry and bare metal is visible.

Apply Motorcycle Chain Lubricant
Shake the chain lube can thoroughly. Aim the applicator straw at the inside run of the chain (where it meets the rear sprocket) and spray evenly over the rubber O-rings and center rollers while slowly turning the rear wheel backward. Complete two full rotations to guarantee complete, uniform coverage.

- • Zero pooled droplets dripping off the bottom of the chain links.
- • Spraying only the outside plates where centrifugal force immediately slings lube off the bike.

Wipe Excess Lube and Inspect Brake System
Lightly glide a clean rag over the outer side plates of the chain to pick up excess surface lube without touching the inner O-rings. Inspect the rear brake rotor and tire contact patch closely with a light to ensure zero overspray occurred. Clean the rotor with isopropyl alcohol or brake cleaner if any mist is detected.
