📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Disconnect battery and clear intake path
Loosen the 10mm nut on the negative battery cable and pull the terminal completely off the post, securing it away from metal. Locate the air intake tube connected to the throttle body and loosen the worm-gear hose clamp using a flathead screwdriver or socket.
- • Negative battery terminal is resting completely clear of the battery post.
- • Intake duct hose clamp is visibly loose and sliding freely.
- • Leaving the battery connected while unplugging drive-by-wire throttle harnesses.
Remove intake duct and disconnect electrical harness
Wiggle the flexible air intake tube off the throttle body inlet neck and set it aside. Slide back the colored locking tab on the throttle position harness connector, press the release tab, and pull the plug straight out without tugging on the wires.
- • Intake tube is removed, fully exposing the throttle body mouth.
- • Wiring harness plug is detached with its locking tab intact.
- • Pulling on the wire harness bundle instead of gripping the plastic connector shell.
Clamp coolant lines and unbolt throttle housing
If coolant bypass lines attach to the base, clamp both hoses with pinch-off pliers and slide the spring clamps back before pulling the hoses off. Remove the four mounting bolts holding the throttle body to the intake manifold in a criss-cross pattern, then lift the throttle body away.
- • Throttle body is completely removed from the intake manifold and resting on a clean workbench.
- • Coolant hoses are pinched with zero fluid actively dripping onto the engine.
- • Cleaning the throttle body while still mounted to the engine, which drains solvent and sludge into the intake manifold.
Clean throttle bore and butterfly plate
Hold the throttle body so the black plastic electronic motor housing stays pointed UPWARD to prevent solvent from leaking into the electronics. Spray throttle body cleaner onto a lint-free towel and nylon brush, then scrub the heavy black carbon ring around the butterfly plate and bore perimeter until bare aluminum shows.
- • Throat of the throttle body is bright, bare silver metal with zero black carbon rings visible.
- • Plate edge and mating bore are completely free of sticky residue when gently pushed open.
- • Holding the unit upside down, allowing solvent to seep past shaft seals into the stepper motor.
- • Using a brass or wire brush that scratches the precision-machined bore.
Replace gasket and reinstall throttle body
Pull the old rubber or paper gasket off the intake manifold face and wipe the mating surface dry. Install the new gasket, align the throttle body, and thread all mounting bolts by hand before torquing them to factory specification (typically 7–10 ft-lbs / 84–120 in-lbs) in an alternating criss-cross sequence.
- • New gasket cleanly seated in its groove with no pinches or folds.
- • Throttle body sits perfectly flush against the intake manifold with all four bolts torqued down.
- • Reusing a flattened, hardened old rubber gasket, causing an immediate vacuum leak.
- • Overtightening bolts into plastic intake manifolds, stripping the brass threaded inserts.
Reconnect lines, intake tract, and battery
Reattach coolant hoses, release pinch clamps, and securely click the electrical connector into place until the locking tab engages. Reinstall the intake duct tube, tighten the hose clamp firmly, and reconnect and tighten the negative battery terminal.
- • Intake boot is pushed fully over the throttle lip with clamp tight.
- • Harness locking clip is fully pushed in.
- • Negative battery terminal is clamped solid with zero play when wiggled by hand.
- • Forgetting to release the hose pinch-off pliers from the coolant lines.
- • Leaving the intake hose loose, which lets unfiltered air bypass the air filter.
