How to Change a Car Battery
Safely remove an old vehicle battery and install a new one by disconnecting terminals in the proper order, securing hold-down hardware, and preventing electrical shorts.

๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Socket set with extension (commonly 8mm, 10mm, or 13mm)
- โ Combination wrenches
- โ Wire battery terminal brush
- โ Safety glasses
- โ Insulated work gloves
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Replacement car battery (exact group size/CCA match)
- โ Dielectric grease or battery terminal protector spray
- โ Anti-corrosion felt terminal washers
- โ Shop rag
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Turn off the engine, remove keys from ignition, and engage the emergency brake before touching the battery.
- โข Always disconnect the negative (black/-) terminal first and reconnect it last to prevent electrical short-circuit sparks.
- โข Wear safety glasses and gloves at all times to protect against caustic sulfuric acid residue.
- โข Never bridge a metal wrench between both battery terminals or between the positive terminal and the car chassis.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Prepare Vehicle and Safety Gear
Park on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key to prevent accidental ignition or computer wake-ups. Pop the hood and secure it firmly with the hood prop rod. Put on safety glasses and insulated gloves before touching any engine components.
- โข Hood is locked open on the prop rod.
- โข Vehicle ignition is off with key removed.
- โข User is wearing eye protection and gloves.
- โข Leaving the key in the ignition, which risks locking doors or frying active electronics during disconnection.
Disconnect the Negative Terminal
Locate the negative terminal marked with a minus sign (-) or a black cable clamp. Loosen the terminal clamp nut counterclockwise using a 10mm socket or wrench until loose. Wiggle and lift the clamp straight off the post, then bend the cable safely away from the battery so it cannot spring back.
- โข Negative terminal clamp is completely detached from the post.
- โข Black cable is physically separated and tucked away from the negative terminal.
- โข Disconnecting the positive terminal first, which risks severe sparking if a tool touches bare metal.
Disconnect the Positive Terminal
Flip back any protective red plastic cover over the positive terminal marked with a plus sign (+). Loosen the clamp nut counterclockwise with your wrench until the clamp moves freely. Lift the clamp off the post and push the red cable clear of the battery tray.
- โข Both positive and negative battery posts are completely bare.
- โข Both cables are pushed clear of the top perimeter of the battery.
- โข Allowing the wrench to bridge across the positive post and engine ground while turning.
Remove the Hold-Down Bracket
Identify the battery hold-down mechanism, which is either an overhead crossbar or a wedge bracket clamped to the bottom lip. Unbolt the retaining nuts or J-hooks using a socket with an extension. Remove the bracket and fasteners carefully and set them aside where they will not fall into the engine bay.
- โข Hold-down bar or base wedge is completely removed from the battery.
- โข Fasteners are safely placed in a parts tray or magnetic dish.
- โข Dropping the long J-hooks or small base bolts down into the subframe or splash shield.
Extract Old Battery and Clean Tray
Grip the battery by its built-in carry strap or by the bottom rim and lift it straight up and out of the vehicle. Place the old battery flat on the ground. Inspect the empty tray and cable ends, scrubbing away any white or green corrosion using a wire terminal brush and shop rag.
- โข Battery tray is empty and clear of debris or corrosion chunks.
- โข Inside surfaces of both cable terminal clamps show clean, shiny metal.
- โข Tilting a flooded lead-acid battery sideways, which can leak electrolyte acid through vents.
Install and Secure the New Battery
Lower the new battery into the tray, ensuring the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals match the exact layout of your vehicle cables. Install the hold-down bracket and tighten the bolts firmly until snug. Try firmly rocking the battery by hand to verify it cannot slide or tilt.
- โข New battery sits flush and flat in the bottom tray.
- โข Hold-down bracket is bolted tight with no play when the battery is pushed by hand.
- โข Red cable reaches the positive post and black cable reaches the negative post without tension.
- โข Installing the battery backward, resulting in reversed polarity when connecting cables.
- โข Overtightening the hold-down bolts, which can crack the plastic battery casing.
Connect Terminals (Positive First, Negative Last)
Remove the protective plastic post caps. Push the positive (red) clamp fully down onto the positive post and tighten the nut securely with a wrench until it will not twist. Next, push the negative (black) clamp onto the negative post, tighten it firmly, and spray both connections with battery terminal protector.
- โข Positive clamp is fully seated and tightened first.
- โข Negative clamp is fully seated and tightened second.
- โข Both clamps cannot be rotated or pulled off by hand.
- โข Protective spray or dielectric grease covers exposed metal.
- โข Connecting the negative terminal before the positive terminal.
- โข Failing to push the clamp all the way down to the base of the tapered lead post before tightening.

Don’t have everything?
- No Wire battery terminal brush? Coarse steel wool or a stiff wire brush
- No Battery terminal protector spray? Thin layer of petroleum jelly applied over tightened terminals
- No Socket set? Small adjustable wrench (used carefully to avoid rounding clamp nuts)
